Create a Luma icon in Photoshop

previewIn this tutorial, you’ll learn how a Luma icon can be designed in Photoshop using really simple step by step techniques.

By following these really simple instructions you should be able to create your very own Luma icon in no time.

So let’s get started

Step 1

Start by creating a new document (Ctrl+N) making following settings

1

Fill the background with a shade of gray (D9D9D9) and drag at least two guides at the center of document for convenience.

Step 2

Select Pen Tool (P) and draw a shape like one below.

2

If you are new to Pen Tool and find it hard to trace the shape then use  this image instead.Name this layer as “body”.

Step 3

Give the “body” layer these styles.

3

4

5

6

Step 4

Ctrl-click on body layer and go to Select>>Modify>>Contract, type 2px and click OK.Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and fill the selection with any color on it.Reduce the fill of the layer to 0% and give it these styles.

7

8

9

Step 5

Using Ellitical Shape Tool, make a shape as shown below.Reduce it’s fill to 0% and give it indicated layer styles afterward.

Step 6

Make another black oval for eye and give it these styles.

14

15

16

17

18

Duplicate this layer (Ctrl+J) and move it rightward.

19

Step 7

Select Pen Tool (P) and make a shape like one below.Name the shape layer as “leftarm” and make sure to place it below “body” layer.Give it these styles.

26

It seems quite obvious to put a similar arm on the right side of the chracter. Unlike eye, it’s a bit tricky to put a duplicate arm on the right side. To make it work properly, first duplicate the “leftarm” layer then create a new blank layer. Now merge the new layer with the duplicate layer. With the merged layer selected, go to Edit>>Transform>>Flip Horizontal and move it rightward so that you get something like this.

27

Step 8

Create a new layer and place it below “body” layer.Select Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) and fill a selection with black on it.Apply these filters afterward.

Filter>>Blur>>Gaussian Blur ;   Radius= 7.0 px

Filter>>Blur>>Motion Blur ;     Angle= 0deg, Distance= 75 px

Reduce the opacity of the layer to 10%.

28

Add two similar shadows beneath each foot.

29

Step 9

This is an optional step.Select Pen Tool (P) and click on “Paths” option in options bar.Now draw a curved path as shown.Select Brush Tool (B) and pick a soft brush of 13px diameter.Create a new layer above “body” layer then right-click on the path and select “Stroke Path” from the menu.Select “Brush” and click OK.

Apply a Gaussian Blur (Radius= 4.0px) on the layer and change its Blending Mode to “Soft Light”.Finally, remove any part that flows outside the body.

Another good tutorial. As a photographer I use PhotoShop almost exclusively for photos. Working on the web, it’s good to know something about producing graphics as well.

yes I just loved how cute this tutorial was too. Asher has provided an icon set for Kaplang readers too. So if you do not have enough time to try out the tutorial, but would like the finished results, you should download these really cute icons :)
