When Your Marketing Efforts Attract The Wrong Kind Of Attention

clotheslineMany business owners cash in on the festive season by revving up their marketing and targeting more and more customers. This week has seen how one business sent out the wrong message all together, gaining them hundreds of complaints.

Hillier a garden centre based in the UK delivered a festive brochure jam packed with gift ideas to 900,000 homes with the following message…

“Make her feel special with a clothesline this Christmas.”

After being inundated with customer complaints, gaining themselves a place in the telegraph and being talked about all over the Internet, the garden centre had no choice but to announce a public apology and claimed that the message on the brochure cover had been an ill advised joke.

As a designer it is important to give your client what they ask for but have you ever been part of an advertisement that should never have been printed let alone delivered to thousands of homes?

  2. I read about this story earlier this week and found it quite amusing. Even though some customers have been more difficult than others, I have never landed myself a design job such as this one.
